You pull a silver chain out of the drawer for the first time in a month and it has gone dull. Maybe yellowish. Maybe closer to grey. The instinct is immediate: fix it, and fix it hard. Somewhere in the bathroom there is toothpaste, and somewhere online there is a video promising a miracle.
That instinct is where most silver gets damaged. The dullness itself is a thin surface layer that will come away with a cloth. The remedy chosen in a hurry is what removes metal, flattens a finish, strips deliberate detailing or pits the surface permanently.
Nearly every mistake in silver care follows that same shape. A reversible problem gets treated with an irreversible solution.
The most common sterling silver care mistakes are treating tarnish as damage, cleaning with toothpaste or abrasive pastes, using silver dips and ultrasonic cleaners indiscriminately, wearing silver in chlorinated water, over-polishing, and storing pieces damp or near sulfur sources such as rubber, wool and felt.

Mistake One: Reading Tarnish As A Fault
This is the error underneath all the others, and much of the internet gets the chemistry slightly wrong.
Tarnish on silver is sulfidation rather than oxidation. It is not rust, and it is not comparable to iron corroding. Silver reacts with sulfur compounds in the air, principally hydrogen sulfide, to form a thin film of silver sulfide on the surface. The film reads yellow at first, then brown, then close to black.
Two clarifications matter, because both are commonly muddled.
Silver itself does tarnish. You will read that pure silver is inert and only the copper in sterling reacts. That is not accurate. Silver sulfide is the primary component of the film, which means the silver is doing most of the reacting.
Copper does accelerate it. Research on silver-copper alloys records that tarnishing speeds up as copper content rises, because black copper sulfide forms alongside the silver sulfide. Sterling is 92.5 percent silver with the balance usually copper, so it tarnishes faster than fine silver while both tarnish eventually.
The practical consequence: tarnish is proof your piece is real silver rather than evidence of a problem. It also stays on the surface, leaving the metal beneath unchanged.
Mistake Two: Reaching For Toothpaste
Toothpaste is the most widely recommended home remedy for silver and one of the worst.
It works precisely because it is abrasive. The silica and grit in toothpaste are engineered to scrub tooth enamel, which is considerably harder than silver, so the paste removes the tarnish and a little of the surface with it. The scratching is fine enough to look like success on day one and accumulates into a permanently dulled finish over years. Fine jewelers do not treat it as accepted practice.
The same applies to paper towels, tissue, abrasive cloths and scouring pads. Wood-pulp paper is more abrasive than it feels.
Mistake Three: Using The Foil Trick On A Piece That Cannot Take It
The aluminum foil and baking soda method is chemically sound. Aluminum is more reactive than silver, so in hot water with an electrolyte it pulls sulfur away from the silver sulfide and restores the silver rather than removing it. For a plain, brightly polished, unstoned silver chain it is genuinely useful.
The mistake is applying it universally. It is the wrong choice for:

Mistake Four: Trusting A Silver Dip To Know What To Remove
Liquid silver dips dissolve the sulfide layer chemically and work impressively fast, which is exactly the problem.
A dip cannot distinguish between tarnish you want gone and oxidation a designer put there on purpose. It removes both. Left too long it can pit the surface. Some dips leave a residue that accelerates the next round of tarnish, and repeated use tends to leave a flat, slightly matte surface that is difficult to bring back. On porous stones such as turquoise and opal, chemical staining can be permanent.
Dips have a legitimate place with silverware and plain unadorned chains. If a maker specifies a dip, follow the stated timing exactly. Otherwise this is the single easiest way to ruin a piece in under a minute.
Mistake Five: Treating An Ultrasonic Cleaner As A Deep Clean Button
Ultrasonic cleaners use high-frequency vibration to shake dirt loose, and they are excellent at reaching under set stones and inside complex links.
They are also capable of vibrating stones out of their settings, cracking porous inlays, loosening pavé work, shaking free glued elements, and stripping controlled patina when combined with cleaning fluid. Enamel, fracture-filled stones and weakened solder joints all sit on the do-not list.
A plain solid sterling band is a reasonable candidate. Almost anything more complicated is a gamble with poor odds.
Mistake Six: Wearing Silver Into Chlorinated Water
Of everything on this page, this is the one that produces genuinely permanent damage.
Chlorine attacks sterling silver aggressively. A pool or a hot tub can blacken a piece in a single afternoon, and heat accelerates the reaction, which makes hot tubs worse than pools. Bleach is more severe again and causes irreversible pitting that no amount of polishing will smooth out.
Household cleaning products belong in the same category. Take silver off before swimming, before soaking, and before cleaning anything with bleach in it. If a piece does get into chlorine, rinse it in clean water and dry it thoroughly straight away rather than waiting.
Mistake Seven: Polishing On A Schedule Rather Than When Needed
Abrasive polishing removes silver along with the silver sulfide. That is how it works, and it means every polish spends a small amount of the piece.
On a plain band this matters little for decades. On anything with engraving, texture, a brushed finish or designed contrast between bright and dark areas, routine polishing gradually erases the design. Recesses brighten unevenly. Brushed surfaces go shiny. Fine detail softens.
Polish when a piece looks like it needs it, using a proper silver polishing cloth in straight strokes rather than circles, and stop when the shine returns rather than continuing out of habit.
Mistake Eight: Storing Silver Where It Is Guaranteed To Tarnish
Storage causes more tarnish than wearing does, and two habits do most of the damage.
The first is the bathroom. It is the most convenient place to keep jewelry and the worst, because humidity accelerates the reaction and steam guarantees it. The second is putting a piece away while it is still damp from washing, swimming or perspiration.
The less known problem is what sits next to your silver. Several everyday materials release small amounts of sulfur and will darken silver quietly over months.

Certain painted or varnished wooden boxes.
Store pieces dry, individually, in an anti-tarnish pouch or a sealed bag, somewhere cool and away from the bathroom. An anti-tarnish strip inside a sealed container absorbs sulfur from the trapped air and does more work than most people expect.
Mistake Nine: Putting Silver On First
Perfume, hairspray, sunscreen, body lotion and makeup all leave films and reactive residues on silver.
The order that solves it takes no effort at all. Silver goes on last, after everything else, and comes off first at the end of the day. A quick wipe with a soft dry cloth before it goes away removes the day's oils before they have time to sit.
That single habit prevents more dullness than any cleaning method reverses.
Mistake Ten: Waiting Until The Tarnish Is Heavy
Light tarnish lifts off with a polishing cloth in under a minute. Months of accumulation needs a stronger method, and stronger methods are where finishes and metal get lost.
Catching it early is not fussiness. It is the difference between a cloth and a chemical.
One Question Prevents Most of These Mistakes
Before cleaning any silver piece, ask whether the dark areas are meant to be there.
A brightly polished piece should be uniformly bright, and darkening on it is tarnish to be removed. An oxidized or antiqued piece has been deliberately treated so that recesses stay dark and raised areas stay bright, which is what gives texture its depth. Confusingly, that intentional darkness is the same silver sulfide as tarnish, produced on purpose in a sulfur-rich environment.
Same chemistry, opposite treatment. Tarnish wants removing. Oxidation wants protecting, which means a soft dry cloth and gentle soap only, with no dips, no pastes and no ultrasonic.
